How the tax credit works, in plain words

The tax credit lowers your monthly bill. The Marketplace looks at your expected 2027 household income and your family size, then sets how much you should pay for a benchmark Silver plan. The government pays the rest straight to the insurance company.

  • Lower income usually means a bigger credit. Some people pay $0 for a Bronze plan.
  • The credit works on any metal level. Use it on Bronze to pay less each month, or on Gold to pay less when you see a doctor.
  • Silver gets extra help if your income is lower: smaller deductibles and copays, called cost-sharing reductions.
  • Income limit: for 2027, tax credits are generally for household income from 100% to 400% of the federal poverty level.

Your tax credit is an estimate. If your income goes up during the year, update it. Otherwise you may owe some back at tax time.

Is Obama Care the same as ACA or the Marketplace?

Yes. Obama Care, Obamacare, ACA and "the Marketplace" all mean the same health plans created by the Affordable Care Act.

Who qualifies for a tax credit in 2027?

Most people with household income between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level who do not have affordable job coverage, Medicare or Medicaid. The extra tax credits from 2021–2025 ended, so the 400% income limit is back for 2027.

What if my income changes during the year?

Report it right away. Your tax credit is based on your income estimate. If you earn more than you estimated, you may have to pay some of it back when you file taxes.

Do I pay more for using an agent?

No. Plan prices are set by the insurance company and the Marketplace. They are the same with or without an agent.

I missed Open Enrollment. Can I still get covered?

You can if you have a qualifying life event in the last 60 days, such as losing job coverage, moving, getting married or having a baby. Text me and I'll check.
